Christmas will soon be here and we’re all getting excited about it. Lots of amazing festive and wintry events coming your way, all here in North Lincolnshire; you will be spoilt for choice. Take a look at our events page to find out more.

One of Epworth’s best loved Christmas events is the annual craft fair held at the town’s Old Rectory and the date for this year’s has just been announced.

It will be taking place on Saturday, November 14, and will run from 10.00am until 3.00pm with a wide selection of homemade crafts that make for the perfect and unique Christmas gifts.

There will be more than 20 stalls at the fair and in addition seasonal refreshments with be available in the refectory at the Old Rectory on Rectory Street.

The building, an accredited museum and a Grade 1 listed building, is famous throughout the world as the childhood home of John and Charles Wesley, the brothers who formed a movement that went on to become the world-wide Methodist Church

“Attractions will include our famous guess the weight of the cake stall and there will be festive decorations around the house,” said the Old Rectory’s manager Gill Crawley.

The entry fee has remained at only £1.00 and children under the age of 12 can still get in for free.

Brigg Farmers’ Market celebrates a glorious 15 year anniversary with a spectacular food extravaganza this August.

The event will take place on Saturday 22 August in the Market Place, Brigg. Amongst the stalls will be the favourite Farmers’ Market stalls including local lamb, cheese, cakes and much more. This year, we will be joined by Earthbound Misfits in the shape of scarecrows and Flo the Clown who will be performing street entertainment between 10am and 2pm.

Join in the fun and enter our BIG 15 Birthday Candle Trail. For your chance of winning; pick up a trail entry form from Brigg TIC or from the North Lincolnshire Council stall and hunt for all 15 birthday candles, naming the stall or location you find them at! It’s free to take part and you could win a delicious Farmers’ Market hamper.

No day will be dull with something on offer to keep you busy and entertained this August in North Lincolnshire; there is something on offer for the whole family no matter what the age.

Why not take the opportunity to visit your local markets; Brigg, Ashby or Scunthorpe, where you can find all the produce you would need to hold the perfect summer BBQ. With the summer holidays in full swing let the fun continue with a variety of activities and fun days on offer at each of the North Lincolnshire Council attractions to keep all the children entertained. Fancy taking the fun outdoors then visit the Splash Pads at Central Park or Normanby Hall County Park and make the most of the summer sunshine.

All activities are free. There is no need to book, just drop-in. The café and customer toilets will be closed due to building works being carried out.

Normanby Hall

The Hall and Farming Museum is open for the summer season until 27 September. Discovery workshops taking place throughout the summer include:

22 July and 19 August at 1pm – Pond Dipping: investigate pond habitats by using nets and recording mini-beasts.

29 July and 26 August at 1pm – Bug Hunting: collect and observe a variety of mini-beasts in grassland of the Park.

5 August at 1pm – Storytelling in the woodland: stimulate the senses and use the artistic creations to create your own magical story to share in the story telling chair.

12 August at 1pm – Victorian Washday: use dolly tubs, mangles and irons to discover more about Victorian washday.

Advanced booking is required for all of these activities. Call 01724 720588 to book. Children’s Day is also taking place on 31 August from 1.30pm to 4.30pm. There will be lots of family fun with workshops, games, quizzes and trails.

Waters’ Edge

3 August at 10.30am or 1pm – Fairy House, children’s pottery workshop. It costs £10 and booking is essential.

12 August from 11am to 3pm – Junk Modelling: Bugs. Children’s enviro-art activity.

19 August at 10.30am or 1pm – Spiral Mobiles, craft activity. It costs £3.95 and booking is essential.

26 August at 10.30am or 1pm – Funky Seahorse or Bird decoration, craft activity. It costs £3.95 and booking is essential.

North Lincolnshire Museum

The weekly activities include:

Mondays to Fridays – Mayhem from 10am to 3.30pm: themed activities, crafts and object handling.

Tuesdays – Story time from 1.30pm to 3pm: join Dudley bear and friends in a fun and interactive story time session. Suitable for two to five year-olds.

Wednesdays – Awesome Ancestors at 11am or 1.30pm: themed role play and handle artefacts.

Thursdays – Fun and games from 1pm to 3pm; get involved with creative play, drama and play fun themed games. Suitable for six to 11 year-olds.

Saturdays, Sundays and bank holiday Monday – Artyfact time from 10.30am to 3.30pm (Saturdays and Monday) and from 1.30pm to 3.30pm (Sundays).

The Mayhem themes will change each week, they include archaeology, Roman, Viking, Tudor, Victorians and steel town. All activities are free. There is no need to book, just turn up on the day.

The Museum opens from 10am to 4pm, Monday to Saturday and 1pm to 4pm on Sundays. The Courtyard Café opens 11am to 3pm, Monday to Saturday offering a range of drinks and snacks. For more information call the Museum on 01724 843533.

This July sees the return of the popular Wildlife Day at Waters’ Edge Visitor Centre and Country Park in Barton upon Humber. Get ready to step into the wild side!

The visitor centre will be a hub of Humber activity with all sorts of stripes, tentacles, scales, fur and wings. The fun starts at 10am until 5pm

In attendance this year will be Willow Falconry with an array of amazing feathery friends. Grab this opportunity to get up close and personal with beautiful birds of prey you may only get to see on television.

Meet Lion Learners an educational team who will introduce you to creatures great and small.  From the furry fantastical to shiny shells, Lion Learners will show all the family how to take care of and handle a variety of special animals.

The day’s activities are fun packed for all the family with free fun trails, quizzes and pond dipping activities. Learn all about the natural environment with help from displays from the Wildlife Trust, RSPB and Environment Agency and many more.

Popular craft stalls will be back at the visitor centre offering the best of Lincolnshire crafts for you to browse and buy.

After all the fun, relax on the wooden veranda with a pot of tea and a scrummy piece of cake from the Honey Pot Café.

Waters’ Edge is a free attraction with car parking a short walk close by.

Waters’ Edge is free admission. Some activities on the day may include a small charge to take part.

For all you foodies out there come along and stock up at the Epworth Summer Food Fair on Saturday 18 July 2015. The town already has a great reputation for quality independent shops and the food fair is fast becoming a popular event held 4 times a year becoming bigger and better.

The event runs from 9am until 3pm and will fill the Market Place with many stalls selling the best of locally produced food. You can discover the wonderful array of food on offer direct from the producer. Enjoy the experience of browsing around the stalls and sampling new tastes. This is a great opportunity to chat with the friendly and knowledgeable producers with your chance to swap recipes, tips and advice.

Stalls will include gourmet fishcakes, chocolate and fudge, delicious pies and much more. Local favourites including The Taste of Sardina, Axholme Brewing and Rectory Reserves will be in attendance with new producers such as Nurtured Produce and Family Kardamakis making their debut.

Explore foodie heaven at the Waterside Food Festival!

The Ropewalk in Barton upon Humber proudly hosts the festival in its 3rd year and this year promises to be a real food fiesta. Traders from near and far will arrive Sunday morning to showcase the best of their produce. A variety of produce will be available from sweets, speciality chocolates and fluffy cakes to gourmet fishcakes, local cheeses and bountifully filled pies.

This year activities include cookery demonstrations by local and well known chef Nigel Brown and why not join in the fun and have ago at biscuit decorating? There will be lots do, see, taste and take home at 2015’s Waterside Food Festival

The festival starts at 10am until 4pm with free car parking available at the stunning Waters’ Edge Visitor Centre.

Also featuring this weekend is the This Girl Can in association with Normanby Hall Women’s 5k run.

The popular women’s 5k run at Normanby Hall is returning alongside the This Girl Can event. If you haven’t already booked on, it’s not too late. Book your place on the Metres to Miles website or call them on 01427 872323. If you aren’t a fan of running, then pop along to the event and find out what other sports activities are on offer for women and girls throughout North Lincolnshire. You can join in a range of activities from netball and skipping to boxing and dancing. There will be something for everyone no matter what your fitness levels or experiences are.

The new temporary exhibition at North Lincolnshire Museum is “There and Back Again, Travelling Stories of Local People”. The exhibition runs from 30 June 2015 until February 2016.

This exhibition takes you on a journey with both well-known and less famous local people. Their trips have been to many places within the United Kingdom, in Europe and to places much further away from here. They all had their reasons for leaving their homes and loved ones; some went for their religion, for war, others for business or just for pleasure.

One of the people featured in this exhibition is the Reverend John Parkinson (1754-1840) from East Ravendale. Between 1792 and 1794 he made a Grand Tour of Eastern Europe. He went through Scandinavia to St Petersburg, Moscow and further onto more remote places of Russia. North Lincolnshire Museum Services has a fantastic collection of costume worn by Reverend Parkinson during his travels. Part of this collection will be on display in this exhibition.

Also featured is the Peacock Family. This family, who lived in Bottesford around 1900, did not travel far from their home. The father, Edward Peacock, was a farmer with a keen interest in antiquities, local stories and local dialects. He published several novels as well as serious academic volumes. His enthusiasm about these subjects rubbed off on some of his children. North Lincolnshire Museum houses a large collection of their documentation and books regarding the topics of folklore, dialects and local sayings. Several objects relating to the Peacock Family will be on display in the exhibition.

Besides these personal travel stories the exhibition explores the different methods of travel. Illustrated with pictures from the museum’s photographic collection the exhibition tells how long journeys would have taken and how much they would have cost.
