Happy Cafe
Happy Café is a family-friendly café and bar uniquely set on a private airfield, where guests can enjoy home-cooked food and waffles while watching planes and helicopters take off and land.
The Trolleybus Museum is a unique and engaging destination that offers a nostalgic journey through Britain’s public transport history. Founded in 1969 on the site of a former RAF airfield, the museum is home to the world’s largest collection of preserved trolleybuses, with over 50 vehicles from across the UK and beyond. It was established to save these electric-powered buses from extinction as they were phased out of service, and today it stands as a testament to the golden age of urban transport.
Visitors to the museum can do more than just look at the vehicles—they can ride them. On open days, several trolleybuses are in operation, giving guests the rare chance to experience what it was like to travel on these silent, smooth-running vehicles. The museum also features a range of other attractions, including a Toy Museum, a Cycle Shop Museum, a replica post-war prefab house, and vintage shop displays. These immersive exhibits help paint a vivid picture of mid-20th-century British life.
The museum is known for its family-friendly atmosphere and excellent value. Children can enjoy dedicated play areas, while adults appreciate the knowledgeable and enthusiastic volunteers who bring the exhibits to life. The Tea Trolley Café offers refreshments, and there’s even a small cinema showing historical transport footage. Dogs are welcome too, making it a great day out for the whole family.
Special events, such as the annual “Sandtoft Gathering,” draw enthusiasts from across the country and feature additional vintage vehicles, themed activities, and guided tours. With ongoing plans to expand its facilities and exhibitions, the museum continues to grow as both a heritage site and a community hub.
