About Steelworks Railtours

On selected summer weekends, The Appleby Frodingham Railway runs Railtours around the Scunthorpe Steelworks site. With guides on hand, you'll learn all about Iron and Steel Making with glimpses of red hot steel. The afternoon tours are suitable for all the family, and on selected Saturday evenings they run adult only brake van tours. You can also enjoy a coffee in a restored Buffet carriage when there is a short stop at the loco sheds.

Summer 2022 Brake Van Tours

These tours last around 4 hours, with commentary - you will be guided around the Scunthorpe steelworks site, hearing about the operations and history of the site while seeing it first-hand. Some of the unique industrial scenes are near impossible to see anywhere else - what better way to see it than an open veranda behind a heritage locomotive!

Partway through the tour you will visit our locomotive sheds, where you can enjoy food, visit our gift shop and use the restrooms.

There is no minimum age however, please inform us if you are bringing young children so we can accommodate them.

All tour places must be pre-booked on our website.

Why not book your own veranda?

You can book a veranda of a brake van for the cost of £50.

This can hold between one and six people, and you will have this to yourself for the duration of the tour.
