About Julian’s Bower

Julian’s Bower is a unique turf-cut labyrinth set high above the confluence of the River Trent and River Ouse. Believed to date back to medieval times, it’s one of the few surviving examples of its kind in Britain.

The maze is unicursal, meaning it has a single winding path leading to the centre — often associated with spiritual reflection or penance. The site is freely accessible and offers stunning views across the Humber Estuary, with landmarks like York Minster and the Kilburn White Horse visible on clear days.

Nearby features include Countess Close earthworks and the historic Kell Well. The maze is maintained by local volunteers and celebrated for its peaceful ambience and historical significance.

Visitors can explore the maze, enjoy the scenery, and learn about its origins via an on-site information board. The church porch in Alkborough also features a replica of the maze design.
